All Party Parliamentary Group on Extraordinary Rendition
House of Commons
Press release: Immediate, Tuesday 16th April 2013
Andrew Tyrie welcomes the report of the Constitution Project’s Task Force on Detainee Treatment.
Andrew Tyrie MP said: “The Constitution Project’s Task Force on Detainee Treatment has published a comprehensive and painstakingly researched analysis of American policy towards detainees after September 11. Crucially, it concluded that the United States engaged in kidnap and torture, in violation of its own laws and of international treaties. The report takes us a step closer to the truth.”
“It is in the national interest of not just the United States, but also of Britain, to uncover the truth about the scope of the extraordinary rendition programme. Only then can we draw a line under it and move on.”
Notes to Editors:
The Constitution Project is an American bipartisan think tank, based in Washington, DC, that focuses on constitutional and legal issues. The Task Force on Detainee Treatment was created in late 2010 to examine the past and current treatment of suspected terrorists detained by the U.S. government. It comprises eleven former high-ranking American officials with distinguished careers in the judiciary, US Congress, military, diplomatic service, and other areas of the executive branch.
