Join us for an analysis of major cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court during its current 2014-15 Term at a briefing on Thursday, July 9, 2015, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm in Room 2226 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
The discussion will be led by Steve Vladeck, Professor of Law at the American University Washington College of Law and Supreme Court Fellow with The Constitution Project. It will also include Rita Siemion, Senior Counsel at The Constitution Project.
The discussion will involve major cases decided by the Court this Term, including:
- Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage)
- Glossip v. Gross (lethal injections)
- King v. Burwell (health care subsidies)
- Zivotofsky v. Kerry (separation of powers in foreign affairs)
- Elonis v. U.S. (social media and free speech)
- Young v. United Parcel Service (pregnancy discrimination)
- Tex. Dep’t of Housing & Cmty. Affairs v. TICP, Inc. (housing discrimination)
- Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Comm’n (partisanship and redistricting)
- Reed v. Town of Gilbert (religious signs and free speech)
- Ala. Legislative Black Caucus v. Alabama (race and redistricting)
And will also examine some of the most pressing issues facing today’s Court, generally, including:
- The aging Court
- The Court’s increasingly shrinking docket
- The Court’s unusual numerical (and rhetorical) divisiveness
- The rise of the Court’s “shadow docket”
- The Court’s hostility to lower court precedents
